Last summer, Toupi Park, located on the border between Shenzhen and Huizhou, became a popular getaway thanks to its clear, picturesque streams nestled amid lush greenery — perfect for escaping the scorching heat.
Meanwhile, a nearby road also attracted attention for its interesting name. Duimianhan Road (对面喊路) takes its name from Duimianhan Village, established during the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). According to local lore, a man surnamed Xu married into the Ye family and built his home in their village. Xu’s relatives, who lived in Tianxin Laowei, would often call out across the distance inviting him to return home for dinner. Over time, the area where Xu settled came to be known as Duimianhan Village — literally “shout from the other side” in Chinese.

Today, Duimianhan Village is known as Duimianhan Residents Group (对面喊居民小组), while Tianxin Laowei is now Xinlian Residents Group (新联居民小组), both within Tianxin Community, Shijing Subdistrict, Pingshan District (坪山区石井街道田心社区). Though the practice of calling for dinner across the distance no longer exists, the centuries-old memories and cultural ties of the Hakka people remain alive.
If you spend a day exploring Pingshan, be sure to visit several notable spots around Duimianhan.

Nanzhong School 南中学堂
Built in 1931, Nanzhong School is one of the first protected historical buildings in Shenzhen and an immovable cultural relic in Pingshan. Its white walls, dark blue tiles, cornices, and carved pillars display a unique blend of Hakka and Southeast Asian architectural styles. The school was originally founded to educate children from two villages, offering courses in Chinese, mathematics, geography, and physical education.
Renovated in 2018 by Pingshan District, the school now functions as a community library hosting cultural events and painting exhibitions. Viewed from above, the historic building set on a traffic circle resembles a tropical island in the urban sea.
If time permits, you can walk west along Lantian Road for 20 minutes to visit Shenzhen Technology University (深圳技术大学).
