Tikusen Tsukamoto to play Japanese flute

Japanese artist Tikusen Tsukamoto will play the shakuhachi, a Japanese end-blown flute, next Tuesday at Old Heaven in OCT-LOFT.

The shakuhachi was originally from China, where it is called the chiba, and introduced to Japan in the eighth century. Though it originated in China, it is not widely known in the country, so its Japanese name is used universally.

The shakuhachi is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in hardwood. The instrument underwent a resurgence in the early Edo Period (1603-1868) in Japan, and was introduced to the United States in the 1970s by a U.S. visitor from Japan.

The sound of the shakuhachi is also featured from time to time in non-traditional non-Japanese music, from electronica to pop rock to jazz music, especially after being commonly shipped as a “preset” instrument on various synthesizers and keyboards beginning in the 1980s.
