Hong Kong pianist Shum Kin-wai will give a recital at Nanshan Culture and Sports Center in November.
Shum was the first Chinese prizewinner in the Schubert International Piano Competition in Dortmund, Germany (fourth prize, 2007). He was also a prizewinner in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition (third prize, 1999) and the New Orleans International Piano Competition (audience favorite prize, 2008), both in the United States.
Shum received his early musical training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. But later, he spent four years studying at the business school of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, majoring in finance. Upon his graduation in 1996, his passion for music brought him to the Eastman School of Music in the United States. Subsequently, he furthered his study with pianist Edward Auer at Indiana University where he was at the same time a music theory instructor teaching undergraduate and graduate review classes.
As a devoted teacher himself, Shum has been on the piano faculty of the Hong Kong Baptist University since 2001, and now teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Chinese University of Hong Kong.
