Chinese pianist Chen Sa and French pianist Cyprien Katsaris will collaborate for a show Saturday night at the Shenzhen Concert Hall.

The program will be Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” “Piano Concerto No. 3,” “Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G Major,” Dvorak’s “Slavic Dance Op. 72, No. 2” and Schubert’s “Marche Militaire in D Major.”

Chen, 35, won first prize at the 1994 China International Piano Competition and fourth place at the 2000 International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition and a prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Furthermore, she was a third place winner in the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Chen’s father played the French horn, and her mother was a ballet dancer. Chen studied at Shenzhen Art School with Dan Zhaoyi, who also taught Li Yundi. She pursued further studies with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Chen is also a Steinway artist. Her Chopin album for PentaTone Classics was released worldwide in 2008, winning the Best CD Award by Classic FM. She released an album of works by Rachmaninov and Mussorgsky in 2009 and a new concerto disc featuring “Rachmaninov Concerto No. 2” and “Grieg Piano Concerto” in 2011.

Katsaris studied piano at the Paris Conservatoire with Aline van Barentzen and Monique de la Bruchollerie in the 1960s. As well as piano, Katsaris also studied chamber music in the 1970s.

Katsaris has recorded the complete Liszt transcriptions of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, reissued by Warner Classics in 2006. He has also recorded the music of Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, and other composers, including the rare piano version of Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” with Brigitte Fassbaender and Thomas Moser. Katsaris has his own recording label, Piano 21.
