The annual OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival, featuring over 80 musicians from all over the world, is being held at OCT-LOFT until Oct. 30.

This week’s lineup includes Colline/Kalimi, a duo from Italy and France, Japanese alto saxophonist Akira Sakata (Oct. 20), Israeli pianist Slava Ganelin, Alexey Kruglov & Oleg Yudanov, a duo from Russia, Ganelin Trio from Israel and Russia (Oct. 22), Eddie Gomez Quartet from the United States and China (Oct. 23), DLB Jazz Group from China, Three Fall Band from Germany (Oct. 24) and David Helbock from Austria (Oct. 26).

Colline/Kalimi consists of Giovanni Di Domenico (keyboards/electronics) and Mathieu Calleja (drums/percussion).

Ganelin Trio consists of Slava Ganelin (piano), Alexey Kruglov (saxophone) and Oleg Yudanov (drum).

Eddie Gomez Quartet consists of Eddie Gomez (double bass), Teriver Cheung (guitar), Billy Drummond (drum) and Li Xiaochuan (horn). Gomez is a Puerto Rican jazz double bassist, perhaps most notable for his work done with the Bill Evans trio from 1966 to 1977. He started on double bass in the New York City school system at the age of 11. He played in the Newport Festival Youth Band (led by Marshall Brown) from 1959 to 1961 and graduated from Juilliard in 1963.

His career mainly consists of working as an accompanist, a position suited for his quick reflexes and flexibility. In addition to working as a studio musician for many famous jazz musicians, he has recorded as a leader for Columbia Records, Projazz, and Stretch.

Ganelin is a Lithuanian-Israeli jazz composer. Primarily a pianist, he also plays other keyboards (organ and synthesizer) as well as bass, guitar, and percussions. He was the leader of the Ganelin Trio, described by critic Chris Kelsey as “arguably the world’s greatest free jazz ensemble” of the 1970s and 1980s.
