TNT Theater from Britain will present the English-language play “The Merchant of Venice” with Chinese subtitles to Shenzhen audiences in April.

“The Merchant of Venice” is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. Though classified as a comedy in the First Folio and sharing certain aspects with Shakespeare’s other romantic comedies, the play is perhaps most remembered for its dramatic scenes and is best known for Shylock’s famous “Hath Not a Jew eyes?” speech. Also notable is Portia’s speech about “the quality of mercy.” Bassanio is considered the central hero of the story, and his dearest friend Antonio is mainly described as the kindest man in this world.

The title character is the merchant Antonio, not the Jewish moneylender Shylock, the play’s most prominent and famous character.

TNT Theater was founded in 1980 and since then has established itself as one of the most popular international touring theater companies in the world. The theater stimulates the imagination of the audience and blends various art forms into its performances, including musical and dance elements. The company began producing a series of works by Shakespeare in 2000. To date, TNT Theater has put on more than 1,000 productions in over 30 countries. TNT Theater has won many awards such as the Munich Biennale, the Edinburgh Festival Award and the Tehran Festival Award.
