The Shenzhen Art Museum is currently showcasing “ThermoMatter: 温度 2015 China Contemporary Art Exhibition.”
The exhibition features strong local content, with all the artists having some connection to the city. There are second-generation participants, long-term immigrants and special projects that are explicitly about the city itself. In Chinese, “温度” (“wendu”) can refer to “temperature” as well as to actual and emotional warmth, and it is this connection the artists attempt to explore throughout this exhibition. One of the main focuses is on the juxtaposition between the traditions of the collective village and the sprawling urban metropolis and how the lives and psyches of those living among them are affected.
“Handshake 302,” a gallery and project space in Baishizhou, is also in attendance, presenting “Of a Piece,” where visitors are invited to participate in the creation of a piece of textile art. During the exhibition, there will be a “Handshake 302” volunteer present to assist visitors in stitching, beading, and decorating a collective quilt. Visitors are also welcome to donate any old clothes to the project. The completed collaborative quilt will later be exhibited at the Hangzhou Triennial.
