Japanese visual kei band Kiryu will perform at B10 Live on Wednesday night and U.S. metalcore band Silent Planet will play rock Thursday night.
Formed in 2007, Kiryu is strongly influenced by traditional Japanese culture. The band also often appears with breath-taking settings reminiscent of ancient Japan. Kiryu’s music can be calming and relaxing and matches very well with the idea of old Japan in a modern context. However, some of their music has definite heavy metal tones.
Visual kei is characterized by the use of varying levels of makeup, elaborate hairstyles and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics. Some Western sources think that visual kei refers to a music genre, with its sound usually related to glam rock, punk rock and heavy metal. However, visual kei acts play various genres, including those considered by some as unrelated to rock such as electronic, pop, etc.
Silent Planet is from Los Angeles, California and has recorded two EPs and a full-length album. The band’s members are Garrett Russell (vocal), Spencer Keene (guitar), Thomas Freckleton (bass guitar, keyboard, vocal), Mitchell Stark (guitar), Igor Efimov (guitar) and Alex Camarena (drum).
