BodyVox to move dance floor with ‘Urban Meadow’

U.S. dance company BodyVox will present modern dance “Urban Meadow” at Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center in April.

Ranging from the mysterious to the romantic to the hilarious, “Urban Meadow” represents all the facets of BodyVox in an unforgettable program of dance theater that includes an extensive surprise that the company is keeping top secret and under wraps.

BodyVox is a dance company based in Portland, United States, and was formed in 1997 on commission from the Portland Opera. Led by Emmy Award-winning choreographers Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, BodyVox is known for its visual virtuosity, distinctive wit and unique ability to combine dance, theater and film into breathtaking productions rich in imagery, athleticism and humor. BodyVox has toured to critical acclaim on stages around the world, developed eight award-winning films, 18 original shows and three operas, featuring over 200 original dances. BodyVox’s collection of short films “Modern Daydreams” was a collaboration with performance artist and filmmaker Mitchell Rose, and the film won the American Choreography Award for Outstanding Achievement in Short Film in 2002.

Hampton and Roland are distinguished artists on the world stage, formed by their years working as creators and performers with innovative dance companies Momix, ISO Dance, and Pilobolus. BodyVox builds upon this tradition of excellence with a unique voice that is equally influenced by its Northwest roots and world view.

BodyVox has garnered international acclaim for its ingenuity, creativity and unique approach to theater that assimilates all possibilities for movement, endows it with breathtaking physicality, enriches it with striking imagery and embellishes it with wit and whimsy to create refined dancing that knows no boundaries.
