International theater troupes will present children’s plays every weekend from September to December at Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center.

‘Hana and Momo’

“Hana and Momo” is presented by Principio Attivo Teatro from Italy. Hana and Momo, named after the Japanese words for “flower” and “peach” respectively, are two friends. Their relationship begins as a rivalry and culminates as friendship. Using simple and natural materials such as sand, paper, wood and bamboo to symbolize different characters, the actresses invite audience members into their childhood. Adapted from the book “Fairy Tale of Love” by Hermann Hesse, it hints at the importance of happiness when doing things together.

‘Tvarslojd’

Two circus performers create living sculptures from common objects and their own bodies. Through acrobatics and magic, they find moments of balance, where almost everything is perfect and still. As this moment is quite fragile, concentration but also a little bit of luck is necessary to achieve it. With elegant movements they create installations and images where the different kind of elements have to interact and work together as they are physically holding each other, keeping the pictures from falling apart. The Swedish show demonstrates how something that looks foolish at first, always finds its right place in the end and how intertwined cooperation can reach unexpected heights. The visual form based on choreography and object manipulation is for everyone, regardless of age or language skills.

‘Flight School the Musical’

It’s the first day of Flight School, where they teach birds to fly. Penguin has the soul of an eagle and is ready to live on the wind. But he wasn’t built to soar, as the other birds constantly remind him. Penguin’s spirit won’t be grounded. With some friends of a feather, and a little help on the technical parts, Penguin follows his dreams to flip, flap, fly! Script by Cara Lustik, music by David Mallamud, lyrics by Joshua H. Cohen and directed and choreographed by Wendy Seyb, “Flight School the Musical” is based on the book “Flight School” by best-selling author Lita Judge and presented by the award-winning Vital Theater Company.

‘All Aboard’

Everybody has the fantasy of being on that train which whistles in the night. An interactive parable turning reality into fantasy and blurring the boundaries between observer and performer, Swiss Oskar Troupe presents a voyage into the great unknown. This skilled and delightfully profound parody of the human condition explores the whole wide circle of life and death, wisdom and ignorance, laughter and tears.
