The CWHL is a professional women’s ice hockey league established in 2007. The league comprises seven teams located in Canada, China and the United States, namely the Boston Blades, Calgary Inferno, Les Canadiennes, Markham Thunder, Toronto Furies, HC Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star and Vanke Rays.
HC Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star and Vanke Rays, based at Shenzhen Universiade Center, joined the CWHL in June. Each team is to play six games against its five rivals for a total of 30 games, 15 at home and 15 abroad.
The reason for leagues expansion into China is to help the nation develop its hockey teams. At the time of the announcement, the league was the second fully professional women’s hockey league in North America after the launch of the rival National Women’s Hockey League in the United States in 2015.
