Exhibits, fun events at new Shekou cultural hub

 Design Society|Sea World Culture and Arts Center, a new cultural hub in Shekou, will open to the public this Saturday.

The three major exhibitions are “Values of Design,” “Minding the Digital” and “Nurturing Dreams in Recent Work: Fumihiko Maki + Maki and Associates.” A rich variety of activities including guided tours, talks workshops and performances will be held over the weekend.

‘Minding the Digital’

This exhibition will explore how design mediates technology and core human values. It will display a cross-disciplinary array of designs from over 50 established practitioners around the world as well as a digital generation of talents based in China.

Dates: Dec. 2-June 3, 2018

‘Values of Design’

Drawing from the V&A’s extensive collection, the exhibition will feature over 250 objects from 900 A.D. to the present, and originating from 31 countries, to frame a global debate about how values shape design.

Dates: Dec. 2-Aug. 4, 2019

‘Nurturing Dreams in Recent Work’

The exhibition follows the governing design principles behind the Sea World Culture and Arts Center. A selection of past and current projects stands for the physical implementation of these ideas.

Dates: Dec. 2-June 30, 2018

Hours: Sun.-Thu., 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; Fri.-Sat. 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

Tickets: 80 yuan for “Minding the Digital” + “Values of Design”; half price or free for seniors, children, students, soldiers or the disabled; free for “Nurturing Dreams in Recent Work”

Meanwhile, a two-day public program will include a design conference by international experts, guided tours of the building and exhibitions, workshops, and performances by designers and artists from multiple fields in technology, art and design.

Conference

The all-day conference will be split into two sessions: “China Meets the U.K. in Design” and “Designing Culture, Place-making and Cultural Cities” in the morning and “From Minding to Creating the Digital” and “Future Values: Reflections on ‘Values of Design’” in the afternoon. • Barrier-free structure design (4-5:30 p.m., Dec. 2)

• Welding (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Dec. 3)

• Wood-shaving roses (2-3:30 p.m., Dec. 3)

• Futuristic city design (4-5:30 p.m., Dec. 3)

The following workshops are free to attend without sign-up:

• Badge making (2-4 p.m., Dec. 2)

• Dress making (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Dec. 3)

• Wearable camera (11 a.m.-12 p.m., 1:30-2 p.m., Dec. 3)

Fair

The roof-top garden will be turned into a stage for the public to enjoy outdoor concerts.
