Written by Marsha Norman, “’night, Mother” won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. The play is about a daughter, Jessie, and her mother, Thelma. It begins with Jessie calmly telling her Mama that by morning she will be dead, as she plans to commit suicide that very evening. The subsequent dialogue between Jessie and Mama slowly reveals her reasons for her decision, her life with Mama, and how thoroughly she has planned her own death, culminating in a disturbing, yet unavoidable, climax.

Chiu has a large fan base in China since she founded her own drama company Perry Chiu Experimental Theater and began staging dramas of various genres. Her dramas reimagine the classics through creative integration of physical theaters with new and popular music, ensuring a high standard of performing arts and a fresh experience for the audience. But musical and literary classics are far from the only genre that the versatile stage queen has excelled in. She is noted for starring in plays dealing with sex and gender and having strong female leads, such as “The Vagina Monologues,” “Butterflies Are Free” and “The Golden Cangue.”

Mai began her journey into television circles in 1975 and one year later she acted in “Legend of the Condor Heroes,” a martial art TV series adapted from Louis Cha’s novel of the same title. She has since been awarded the Top 10 Artist Award several times.

Her most recent drama series, TVB’s “Moonlight Resonance,” aired in 2008. For this TVB blockbuster, she won Best Actress in the TVB Anniversary Awards in 2008, Guangzhou TV Awards in 2009 and Asian Television Awards in 2009.
