The “Sonic City” exhibition, curated by Luo Jing, a staff member of the Pingshan Art Museum, delves into urban development through the medium of sound. Featuring works by Zen Lu, Lawrence Lau, mafmadmaf, Marcel Zaes Sagesser & Tristan Braud & Gyuwon Sylvia Lee & Yoyo, ayrtbh, Zafka, and KoonLeung, the exhibition offers a unique sonic perspective on contemporary city life.
Selected for the 2024-2025 Guangdong Art Museum Young Curators Support Plan, the exhibition focuses on urban renewal and transformation, the relationship between humans and their environments, and the future of sound in a technological context.
Through sound collecting and field recording, the artists capture and highlight auditory elements that often go unnoticed in everyday life. From the interweaving sounds of people and machines to the “dialogues” between nature and architecture, these works create a rich, multi-dimensional auditory experience. They remind us that cities are not only visible but also profoundly audible.
“Here, sound is not just background noise; it is a starting point to understand a city’s history, ecology, and culture. We invite visitors to slow down, listen closely, and reconnect with familiar urban environments through their ears, rekindling emotional bonds with the city,” said Luo.
