Pingshan is set to host several events during the 2024 Spring Festival, providing an array of experiences for locals and visitors alike. The festive offerings encompass traditional folk events, sports activities, creative exhibitions, refreshing performances, and more.
Ancestor worship, celebrations
Dawan Ancestral Residence, built in 1791 by the Zeng family, is China’s largest and most completely preserved Hakka-style square compound. On Feb. 11, the Zeng family descendants will worship their ancestors, a 200-year ritual recognized as a city-level intangible cultural heritage, and celebrate the Chinese New Year in a Hakka way.

In 2002, Dawan Ancestral Residence was classified as a provincial protected historical site. Over the past few years, the Pingshan District People’s Government has renovated the residence into a cultural base featuring Hakka food, crafts, and cultural and creative products. In addition to existing exhibitions on Hakka culture, new modern art exhibitions have also occasionally been held at the residence, along with bazaars, light shows, workshops, and concerts, to attract more visitors to experience Pingshan’s Hakka culture.
On Feb. 24, the Lantern Festival, visitors are invited to spend the festival at the residence which will be embellished with diverse dragon decorations.

Kylin dance parade
The Pingshan kylin dance is a city-level and provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. Kylins are revered as auspicious symbols, representing protection, prosperity, success, and longevity in Chinese culture. On Feb. 24, a kylin dance parade will be held in Pingshan Subdistrict.

Story-telling activities
Children are invited to join story-telling activities at Pingshan Library’s picture book hall on Feb. 15 (10:30-11 a.m.) and Feb. 22 (5-6 p.m.).

Music marathon
On Feb. 11 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.), enjoy several live gigs on the lawn in Pingshan District Central Park, where trendy goods, festive decorations and snacks will on sale at markets.

Exhibition, fiber art workshop
The “Nomads in the South: Rivers, Tunnels, Dampness and Constellations” exhibition at Pingshan Art Museum showcases contemporary artworks created by 101 artists and organizations in southern and southwestern China. The exhibition marks the first attempt to explore the contemporary art scenes and cultural environments in these areas within one single exhibition. On Feb. 11-16 (10 a.m.-12 p.m., 3-5 p.m.), visitors are invited to participate in fiber art workshops at the art museum.

Concerts, xiangsheng
On Feb. 16 afternoon at Pingshan Theater, immerse yourselves in a concert featuring Joe Hisaishi’s scores in Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved animated movies, while on the night of Feb. 22, Chinese xiangsheng performer Feng Gong will lead a group of comedians to present a xiangsheng performance. On Feb. 24 afternoon, enjoy an enchanting concert of traditional Chinese tunes to mark the Lantern Festival.

Roll Up the Earth Nature Art Season
Although Pingshan Exhibition Gallery is closed Feb. 9-12, one can come to check out the Roll Up the Earth Nature Art Season, featuring four nature-themed exhibitions at the gallery starting Feb. 13. The four exhibitions include a photography technique exhibition presented by BBC Earth, the “Exhibition of the Outstanding Works From the China Wildlife Image and Video Competition,” “Nature’s Editions,” and “Journey of the Spirit.”

‘Art Takeaway’
In 2023, Pingshan Art Museum launched the "Art Takeaway" project to hold public art activities in communities, schools, universities, industrial parks, and factories. An exhibition featuring the achievements in the project is being held at the Yepsun Quality store at Pingshan Culture Center through March.
