Bus drivers can now check their passengers’ nucleic acid test results and health codes when they scan the QR code to pay their fares.

The introduction of the all-in-one-code service on more than 16,000 buses across Shenzhen has added a health code check function to the payment code. Passengers don’t have to scan the health code and then switch to the payment code when they ride the bus.

Passengers need to complete real name verification via the “深圳通+” WeChat account or “深圳通+” miniprogram before using the all-in-one-code function.

When the payment QR code is scanned, the voice system connected to the payment device will simultaneously report the passenger’s nucleic acid test information and health code status and the fare will be deducted automatically if the passenger meets the requirements.

The service, which is the first one of its kind in China, saves time caused by network delays and manual verification, and it also relieves the workload of drivers and conductors, Xu Zhongyu, director of the Intelligent Transportation Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau, said in an interview Tuesday.

For passengers who do not use payment QR codes, they need to scan their ID cards or health codes after paying their fares.

The upgraded service, supported by the city’s data administration, can adjust requirements for nucleic acid tests accordingly and simultaneously per policy changes on nucleic acid testing.

“The health code information can only be used with the passengers’ consent and will be deleted after verification. It protects residents’ privacy and data security to the maximum,” Xu said.

The official also said that the all-in-one-code service will be expanded for other uses such as Metro services.
