All electric bikes that meet mandatory national standards can be registered with the public security authority after the city’s e-bike administration regulations are implemented on a trial basis Aug. 1.

E-bikes will not be allowed on roads if they are not registered, DT News reported.

As of the end of January this year when the city’s scheme to pilot e-bike registration came to an end, the traffic police had recorded over 2.5 milion e-bikes.

Under current rules, e-bikes purchased online or from other cities lack the documents necessary for registration, so they are not able to be registered. But the situation may change after Aug. 1 when the e-bike administration regulations are implemented.

In order to prevent fraudulent use by others, traffic police suggest that riders apply for registration cancellation, if their e-bikes are not used in Shenzhen for a long time.

The police also caution people against the private trade of registered e-bikes, and advise that riders should transfer the ownership according to regulations.

“The private deals don’t transfer the ownership of the plate. Violations of traffic law and traffic accidents still get the former owner involved,” said police officer Ye Zhuohao.

Owners of e-bikes can change the registration of ownership on Yiqixing (易骑行) miniprogram, according to Ye.
