In the Fuchang residential community in Pingshan District, a charity restaurant called “Home of Love” (爱之家) has been serving free lunches to elderly residents living alone and families in need for more than 600 consecutive days.
The restaurant operates without a boss or paid staff. From food preparation and cooking to delivery and cleaning, all tasks are performed by volunteers. Leng Feiyan, who has been with the restaurant since it opened, said the initiative has been sustained by long-term support from the community and local businesses, as well as a rotating team of more than 150 volunteers. All procurement records and expenses are publicly disclosed to ensure that every donation goes directly to those who need it most.

Beyond providing meals, volunteers also monitor the well-being of diners. “If a regular senior hasn’t shown up for a while, we’ll send them a message to check on their well-being or visit if needed,” a volunteer said.
Last year, this careful follow-up helped uncover a family in need that included both an elderly person and a seriously ill grandchild. The volunteers alerted community workers, who soon stepped in to provide support.
What began as a meal service has evolved into a bridge of care. Some elderly diners have also started giving back by helping to wash dishes and sharing the warmth they have received.
As of June 2026, “Home of Love” has served more than 75,000 free lunches, delivered nearly 4,000 meals to residents' homes, recorded about 18,000 volunteer hours, and collaborated with 15 caring organizations. Through this small community-run restaurant, residents, businesses, and local authorities have come together in a shared act of kindness.
