On April 23, a group of journalists from 14 media outlets across eight APEC economies visited Pingshan District, immersing themselves in Shenzhen’s strengths in new energy vehicle manufacturing and integrated cultural and tourism development.

At BYD’s headquarters, the journalists learned about the company’s history and technologies, lined up for test drives, and captured memorable moments with their cameras. From the “dancing” Yangwang U9 to the Blade Battery “needle penetration test,” they not only watched smooth maneuvers and dynamic performances, but also witnessed demonstrations of the battery’s safety — experiencing firsthand China’s intelligent manufacturing and innovation.

Kornkit Disthan, International News Editor at The Better (Thailand), said no country offers more electric vehicle (EV) choices than China. He noted that Chinese EVs — known for their diverse designs and strong value for money — are already popular in Bangkok, and that he is considering buying one himself.

Luki Aulia, a journalist from Kompas (Indonesia), test-drove a Yangwang U9 and a Fang Cheng Bao vehicle. She praised the vehicles’ responsive acceleration, smooth ride quality, and high safety, adding that they can even handle flooding. She also said BYD’s design, value, and environmental credentials have made it a popular choice in markets such as Brazil and Indonesia.

Dexter Barro II, a business reporter with the Manila Bulletin, said Chinese companies are forward-looking and full of innovative energy, particularly in their long-term technology strategies.

The group then visited Changshou Dramaville, a cultural space revitalized from a 300-year-old Hakka residential compound. Standing on a modern rope-net installation over the old half-moon pond, watching a shadow puppet exhibition, and exploring an outdoor ruins theater, the international visitors were captivated by the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

Josimar Elias, deputy business editor at El Comercio (Peru), said he was delighted to explore Pingshan’s culture, history, and architecture. While Latin America has its own heritage sites, he noted that the craftsmanship and style here are unique — an experience he said is worth sharing back home.

From cutting-edge EV technology to the cultural renewal of historic sites, the tour gave the journalists a fresh perspective on Shenzhen — a city defined by both fast-paced innovation and deep cultural roots.

The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be held in Shenzhen this year; with an open vision and warm hospitality, Pingshan has actively positioned itself as a hub for international exchange.
