“Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby,” a dance drama based on the hit BBC series, launched its Asia tour with performances at Pingshan Theater on March 7-8, drawing a large audience including many visitors from Hong Kong.
After final production work and rehearsals in Pingshan District, the Rambert Dance Company from the U.K. staged six performances over the weekend. Pingshan Theater partnered with the Cityline ticketing platform to offer a package that included cross-border bus fare, making it easier for Hong Kong audience members to travel to Pingshan for the show.
Marcus Lam, executive director and general manager of Cityline, said that Hong Kong residents are increasingly traveling to the mainland for a variety of activities — from shopping and dining to attending shows and exhibitions. “Our ticketing data show Pingshan Theater has become an important destination for Hong Kong audiences,” he added.
In recent years, Pingshan has hosted a string of high-quality productions that have supported Shenzhen-Hong Kong cultural exchange, including City Contemporary Dance Company’s “Home Sweet Home,” the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra’s “Pictures at an Exhibition (with animation),” and Zuni Icosahedron’s “The Smiling, Proud Wanderer.” In April, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s “The Emperor, His Mom, a Eunuch and a Man” is scheduled for three performances at Pingshan Theater.
Statistics show that visitors from Hong Kong and Macao have made up nearly 10% of the audience at many major productions staged in Pingshan. Some Hong Kong attendees said combining a show in Pingshan with visits to local high-tech sites and Hakka cuisine made the trip especially rewarding.
Looking ahead, Pingshan plans to stage more high-quality shows, deepen cooperation with Hong Kong organizations, and improve cultural, dining and transport services to attract more visitors.
