Dramas, culinary delights, beer, trendy goods and live music are filling 10 nights of the Pingshan Midsummer Nights event from Aug. 22 to 31 in Pingshan District.

At the opening ceremony, many residents arrived early at the main venue — Pingshan District Central Park — to soak up the atmosphere. “This is my first time seeing the Yingge dance; it's stunning. Every movement was full of energy and really excited me,” said one visitor. “There are many snacks and fun activities — I recommend people come,” said another. “Interacting with clowns and comedians made me feel like part of the performance,” added a third.

Hundreds of drones lit up the night sky with dazzling formations and phrases such as “Innovative Pingshan” and “City of Future.”

At the event’s subvenue, Shenzhen Pingshan Changshou Dramaville, audiences watched the Chinese drama “I Love Peach Blossom” and were surprised when famed director Zhang Guoli appeared onstage to lead a post-show discussion. “I can't believe I saw Zhang Guoli tonight. After his talk, I understand the drama much better,” said an audience member.

Over the 10-day festival, rock bands, rap acts and electronic performers will deliver a diverse musical lineup at the Pingshan District Central Park, while food and drink stalls turn the site into a lively summer carnival. Each night features a different theme — classic hits, Cantonese ballads, romantic songs, Hakka culture and more — ensuring something new every evening. Interactive games will give attendees chances to win prizes, including food vouchers and merchandise.

A series of Chinese plays, such as “My Monkey Mind,” “The Book of Will” and “The Landscape of the Other Shore,” will be staged, and shopping malls across the district will host discounts and events that highlight Pingshan’s urban charm: innovation, vitality, art and fashion.
