The Maluan Subdistrict Management Service Center in Pingshan District recently invited expat volunteers to lead a basketball training session in English and a German-language class for children, providing an enjoyable way for youngsters to learn foreign languages and engage in sports.
At the basketball class on April 24, Felipe Vieira Setlik from Brazil, certified by the Jr. NBA Coaches Academy, introduced children to Kobe Bryant’s playing style at the start of the session, quickly capturing their interest. Setlik’s enthusiasm inspired the young players to practice attentively and passionately. He also conducted teamwork exercises, helping the children develop cooperation skills through sports.

On April 25, German volunteer Samuel Sadiq led a German-language class for children. A lecturer at Shenzhen Technology University in Pingshan, Sadiq has been actively involved in numerous community events in the district since 2020. His German classes feature picture book readings, fun activities, and quizzes.

In a previous interview with Shenzhen Daily, Sadiq explained that he wanted to give children the experience of hearing German, allowing them to appreciate its sound. He noted that German often has a reputation for harsh tones, but he believes that “every language can sound really nice.”
In his classes, Sadiq read German stories gently, using expressive gestures to bring the narratives to life. Some parents shared that their children had attended his classes multiple times and gained new insights each time, broadening their horizons.

The subdistrict plans to hold more innovative events that further connect Chinese and expat residents, enriching community life.
