Nine actors from the Chinese drama “The Shawshank Redemption” offered their perspectives on cultural exchanges and Pingshan’s international talent initiatives during a salon held at the Shenzhen Pingshan Changshou Dramaville in Maluan Subdistrict on Aug. 8.
Produced by Shenzhen and crafted by Pingshan, the drama, jointly made by Longma Studio and CDE Live, premiered at Pingshan Theater on Jan. 4, receiving rave reviews and widespread attention. The drama is set to be performed again Aug. 9 at the theater as part of the Shenzhen “Pingshan Drama” Carnival.
During the salon, the actors expressed a strong sense of belonging when they returned to Pingshan, particularly impressed by the newly established dramaville. Matti E. Lehtonen, who portrays Brooksie in the drama, was captivated by the dramaville’s preservation of traditional architectural styles integrated with modern elements, saying it has created a beautiful setting for theatrical productions.

The groundbreaking “Shawshank” drama was celebrated for the exceptional performances delivered by 11 foreign actors who can speak fluent Chinese. James Clarke, who plays Andy Dufresne in the drama, remarked on the production’s pioneering approach to cultural exchange, praising it for introducing a fresh allure to international theatrical arts.
Andy Friend, cast as the warden in the drama, emphasized the limitless nature of culture and the significance of presenting a beloved Western narrative to the Chinese audience. He lauded Pingshan’s efforts in cultivating international talent, highlighting the crucial role of infrastructure, amenities, services, and business environment in attracting global professionals.
A representative from the Maluan Subdistrict Management and Service Center for Expats noted that events like this salon exemplify the appeal of cultural diversity and talent exchange, injecting progressive ideas and vitality into urban development, thereby drawing international talents.
A foreign entrepreneur in attendance concurred, noting the growing allure of China to foreigners and the consequent influx of business prospects and skilled individuals. He praised Shenzhen for its forward-looking vision and exemplary services, encouraging international talents to consider Pingshan as a welcoming destination.
