Yunlu Shenzhen Research Institute, a subsidiary of Qingdao Yunlu Advanced Materials Technology Co. Ltd., a listed company with the State-owned enterprise AECC holding the controlling share, commenced operations in Pingshan on Sept. 1.

The institute is dedicated to establishing advanced material and magnetic device product industry standards, aims to establish the most advanced electromagnetic compatibility laboratory in China by utilizing Yunlu Group’s advantages in soft magnetic base materials. It will provide a high-quality platform for new energy and new material talents, and serve the new energy vehicle (NEV), photovoltaic energy storage, and power industries in Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The new materials industry is a foundational and leading industry within the national economy, as well as a key area for strategic emerging industries and high-tech competition. Accelerating the new materials industry development is of strategic significance for industry innovation and iteration. It also supports the development of strategic emerging industries, ensures construction of major national projects, and pushes the transformation of traditional industries.

According to Shenzhen’s Action Plan for Cultivating and Developing the New Materials Industry Cluster (2022-2025) released by the city’s industry and information technology bureau, the development and reform commission, and the science and technology innovation commission, Pingshan is positioned as the core area for new energy materials, with a primary focus on production and manufacturing.

The new materials development in Pingshan is centered on new energy materials while also reinforcing the electronic information materials and biomedical materials development. It will collaborate with the Shenshan High-end Electronic Chemicals Park and surrounding areas to foster new materials development.

The new materials industry in Pingshan has distinct characteristics and prominent advantages, especially in the electronic information materials and NEV materials fields. Pingshan is home to nearly 200 new materials enterprises, including Capchem, Woer Heat-shrinkable Material, Nonfomet and BTR. The new energy materials industry chain, represented by lithium batteries, is relatively complete, while the electronic information materials enterprises are concentrated and cutting-edge industries are developing rapidly.

Pingshan now has 178 new materials enterprises above designated size. The output value in 2022 reached 43.51 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 93.1%. From January to July 2023, the output value reached 35.12 billion yuan, showing a year-on-year growth of 85%.

Academic institutions in Pingshan include Shenzhen Technology University’s College of New Materials and New Energies and College of Integrated Circuits and Optoelectronic Chips, and the Institute of Superlubricity Technology of the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen. There are also corporate research and development institutions such as the Capchem Research Institute, BTR Central Research Institute, BYD Central Research Institute, Shenzhen Eigen-equation Graphene-based Lithium-ion Battery Engineering Center, and the Shenzhen Woer Heat-Shrinkable Materials Technology Center. In addition, there are high-end innovation platforms and public service organizations including the X-Institute Innovation Education Alliance, and the Shenzhen Automotive Research Institute BIT’s Testing and Inspection Center.
