Chinese and foreign residents in Pingshan International Block celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival together June 21 afternoon at Shenzhen Hong Kong Macao Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Incubator in Pingshan District, wrapping zongzi and bundling mugwort leaves and calamus.
Bundling and hanging mugwort leaves and calamus during the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional practice with cultural significance. Mugwort leaves, is believed to possess medicinal properties and is used in traditional Chinese medicine for its warming and healing effects. Hanging mugwort leaves is thought to ward off evil spirits, promote good health and prevent diseases. Calamus, also known as sweet flag, has a unique fragrance and is believed to have the power to repel evil spirits and bring good luck and blessings.
Chinese residents also learned English vocabulary, read Chinese and English poems and learned stories and customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival at the June 21 event. By engaging in these activities, people not only connect with their cultural heritage but also demonstrate their reverence for traditions that have been passed down through generations. Together, the residents created a joyful and harmonious atmosphere, making this celebration a cherished memory for all who took part.
