An illustration show based on two illustrated stories created by Chinese artist Chen Jianghong will be held Saturday at the Shenzhen Concert Hall.

The show is a China-France collaboration. It is a slideshow series of Chinese ink-painting illustrations accompanied by music composed by Remi Berger and Thomas Landbo. It is directed by Francois Orsoni. When it was shown in France last year, it was recited in French by Estelle Meyer and Suliane Brahim of the Comedie Francaise. The Shenzhen show, featuring Chen’s books “The Magic Horse of Han Gan” and “The Tiger Prince,” will be recited in Mandarin.

“The Magic Horse of Han Gan” is about the legend of Han Gan, an eighth century Chinese artist whose paintings of horses one day come to life. The striking and colorful compositions are a parable of power, responsibility and the miracle of art. “The Tiger Prince” is an enchanting and fascinating story about the mother-son relationship between a little prince and a tigress.

Chen was born in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin in 1963. He studied painting from 1979 to 1982 in his hometown and completed his studies in Beijing in 1987 at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. Since then, he has lived in France, where he works as a freelance painter and illustrator. Chen also has a studio in Berlin, Germany.

Chen’s international fame is due largely to his picture books. Chen writes beautiful children’s stories that are compelling and enriching. Chen’s illustrations are characterized by an impressive dynamism and his combination of classical Chinese painting with modern Western imagery. His paintings have been exhibited in various galleries and museums around Europe, Asia and America.

To date, he has written and illustrated 11 of his own books and provided illustrations for more than 20 works by other authors. His books have received numerous important prizes, including the Prix Sorcieres in 2004 and the German Prize for Youth Literature in 2005.
