The Shanghai Beijing Opera Troupe will present “Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy” at the Huaxia Art Center in September.

“Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy” is one of the eight model plays that were popular during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). In the winter of 1946, while the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) covered the northeastern battlefield, a bandit gang fled to Tiger Mountain and put up a stiff resistance there. The PLA pursuing troop, led by Shao Jianbo, chief of staff, went deep into the snowy forest. The reconnaissance platoon head Yang Zirong, with the help of a hunter, Lao Chang, and his daughter, Chang Bao, found the track of the bandits and caught their contact person Luan Ping and got the “secret contact map,” which the bandit gang had long desired.

Yang then went to Tiger Mountain in disguise and pretended to dedicate the map. He managed to answer the head bandit’s questions and sent out intelligence to PLA troops in time. Afterward, the PLA troop was stationed at Jiapi Valley to get ready for the imminent battle. Luan escaped to Tiger Mountain while being escorted, which put Yang in danger. But Yang killed Luan. According to the original plan, Yang arranged a chicken dinner and collaborated with the PLA troop to attack from outside, killing the whole bandit gang.
